Description
On 24th June 1972 Marc Bolan & T.Rex played Newcastle City Hall as part of a short Summer tour which took in Cardiff , Birmingham, Manchester. Metal Guru was No.1 In the singles chart (the second single of the year and the second No.1) and the classic album The Slider was scheduled for release the following month. They had recently sold out 2 shows at Wembley Empire Pool and Marc Bolan was working with ex-Beatle Ringo Starr on his own Movie Project Born to Boogie. Here was a band at the very top of their game ….
45 years on from that very concert in Newcastle we are releasing a double Live album from some of the best performances from that and the previous year captured on Marc’s very own reels of tape

Thanks to all at "Easy Action Records" for another wonderful product on the late great Marc Bolan & T Rex from their heyday. I do own every song version from this CD on either "The Electric Boogie 71" or "The Total T.Rex 71/72" Box Sets (Bob Harris Introduction Excluded) but it’s great to have them all together and the sound on some of the tracks is noticeably better…in my opinion. The booklet is excellent as is the "There Was A Time" Magazine. I vividly remember owning every article & pics from the items featured, brought back great memories, amazing to think it was 45/46 years ago. I’m 60 later on this year but listening to this CD today & reading the Magazine made me feel I was 14/15/16 again…it really did…"Happy 70th Marc…wherever you are… for the 30th September..you’ll never be forgotten thanks to your loyal fans & all the people who work at "Easy Action Records".. Well Done!

Great live album with good sound quality and amazing atmosphere from when T. Rex were at their peak. It really rocks and there was still a hint of Tyranosaurus Rex there as well. Debora and Elemental Child are highlights.

The packaging of this set is excellent, complementing the colours of ‘Electric Warrior’ throughout: the front sleeve photo is awesome and perfectly sums up Marc’s live performance at this time. Just a pity the spine is too narrow so it doesn’t close properly: someone goofed! What comes out of this collection is how fantastic Marc was live with terrific versions of his work. There is a real rawness and edge to his live performances that got muted in the studio versions. This is also a showcase for his skills on the guitar that shine throughout this.
On the downside this tries to mimic a full live concert but this is not successful. The songs are terrific but they would never have been performed together in one concert: so this makes the inclusion of the live ’warts and all’ dialogue redundant and annoying. How many times do you want to hear Marc’s incoherent ramblings when he admits to being very drunk, or yet another release of that doomed version of the beautiful “Spaceball Ricochet” with the song interrupted with Marc saying “get off the stage man” and never being able to finish the song? I think it would have been more successful without these elements. Better to have had live versions of the singles from “The Slider” rather than just their B sides.
Overall though, this shows great songs and great performances. However, it is sad that soon Marc was to lose that edge and talent in a sea of excess and egotism that marred his work after “The Slider”, with him not returning to form until his final album “Dandy in the Underworld”.
